Black History Month commemoration aims to celebrate the lives of the banished people who were moved for Tlhakong village and kept as prisoners in Driefontein, outside Zeerust. Banishment was common during those days as the police believed that is was remedy to dissolve connection of individuals who were politically active.

There are many people who made sacrifices for the South African freedom and have all but been forgotten by history. The National Heritage Council (NHC) of South Africa has honored these 11 men by inscribing their names on the Wall of Remembrance at the Freedom Park.

For many years, Driefontein was a home for the 11 men. it was important to visit their “erstwhile” homes, thank the hosts, build, and restore relationships and hopefully bestow lasting honour in a form of a monument to preserve the selfless sacrifices for the freedom of South Africa.
